IM DARK-SKINNED AND UGLY •D'Journae's Diary• -01

Originally I wanted to do something totally different for the first post on 'D'Journae's Diary' but a message a young girl sent me threw me off completely. So I guess that original post will have to wait..

I'm darkskinned and ugly or I'm ugly because I'm dark is something I've heard a couple of times throughout the years. For a minute I thought this attitude was starting to change, with the rise of celebrity's like Justine Sky, Bella Gunz, Brittany Sky and even Lupita (dare I say it) but boyyyyyy was I wrong.

This past weekend I received a comment from a young girl who felt ugly, who felt unworthy. - it litterally changed my mood completely and it made me want to speak up.

Now I wouldn't consider myself darkskinned. If anything I'm more towards the 'lightskinned' side but I DON'T CARE!!! I will still speak because issues like this hurt me so much. After all, I am African and in a society that tells us to disconnect ourselves from our roots I'm telling you -DON'T LISTEN!

Be you, you are original and you are beautiful. Your skin color not only represents who you are but also where you come from. If you are an AFRICAN QUEEN you are going to have that Melanin in you. It's what makes us special, so admirable and beautiful.

As tupac said, "the darker the flesh, the deeper the roots" and it's true.

Girl you kill em anyway! Brown girls kill them just as much as any other skin tone. Remember that out there, there is always someone who wants what you have. When you're trying to be lighter, there is always someone dying to be darker. So don't take advantage of what you have. Embrace it all day, everyday! Look for role models that represent you and look like you. They are all over!

Look at Nikki Perkins (Jamieandnikki on YouTube) for example, she is absolutely stunningggggggg. Ask me whether I'd rather look like her or Nicki Minaj and I would tell you her, with no doubt! (Sorry Nicki).

And, by writing this I do not mean to offend any light skinned girls. I simply believe it's time that society changes. Being darkskin has been condemned for so long that we need to put it in the limelight.

I was actually having a conversation with my friend about the amount of 'brown skin bombshell' pages that are on Instagram right about now. She made a point about it all being part of a cycle where soon light skin girls would be put down and blah blah blah. She does have a point, although I don't think it will get to that stage any time soon lol.

I really hope that one day there will be no divide between the black community. It has gone on for way too long and now it's up to us to change things for future generations.

And.... To the girl who left the comment..

I hope you found some encouragement through this post. I hope you go out tomorrow knowing that you are EVERYTHING, you are a QUEEN and you are BEAUTIFUL so do not let anyone tell you otherwise. You are still young and one day you'll 'glo' up so nicely that you wouldn't even know why you were so worried when you were younger. Live life and have fun!
One day you'll have everything you've ever dreamed of and be a role model to those beautiful brown skinned girls coming after you.

Thank you for reading!

•Guest Blogger• A GUIDE TO EASY HOLIDAY GIFTING - Nana Ashanti

Auld Lang Syne. The holidays are upon us. I love Christmas season. I really do. Everything is nice. Everyone is all smiles. Tis the season to give and love.
Now comes the fun part. Gifting. Or a nightmare, depending on how you look and go about it. After 11 months of receiving love, support and guidance from your friends and family, it is only nice that you show your appreciation. Ever heard the phrase, “It’s the thought that counts”?
So how do you gift on a budget? How do you make the thought count without incurring a 0.00 bank balance?  This is the rule of thumb: What is the recipient interested in? What are their passions?
If you are close enough with the recipient, this can be an easy feat. But if you don’t and you want a general list of small little things to get for your loved ones, here you go.

                                                                Holiday Cards/Notes
So holiday cards are very popular. Hallmark does a good job of writing all those words we were struggling to say. Sending a holiday greeting card is inexpensive and very thoughtful. If you decide to go this route, always write a note with your card. Add a personal touch. Include other family members’ names and pets in the note. This is a warm way of showing your attentiveness and appreciation.

                                                                 Gift cards
Gift cards are also a very nice way to send your love this holiday season. Most department stores, restaurants and online shops have gift cards available. Think about what your loved one uses the most and get a gift card. A gas gift card, a toy department gift card if they have small kids, grocery store gift card if they have a large family or a restaurant gift card if they like to eat out or are single. It’s a fairly inexpensive way to say thank you. You don’t have buy an expensive gift card. Just enough to offset part of a bill. Not too little not too much, if you get what I mean.

                                                 Subscription Boxes/Services
2015 was the year of subscription boxes and services. Beauty boxes, care boxes, jewelry boxes, streaming services among others. If you have a friend, partner or spouse that is interested in any of these things, then your best bet is to get them a year’s paid subscription service. Netflix, Ipsy, Essence box, Birch box, Apple Music, Lip monthly, Scent Bird, Hulu Plus, Tidal among others offer the option to purchase a year’s supply of their services. All of these services are charged monthly so giving in advance a year’s worth is more of a home run than anything and guess what, they’ll be thinking of you all year round.

                                                       Planners and Calendars
So the New Year is upon us. In less than 28 days, 2016 will be here. Ps: This year went by too fast or? Is it just me? Anyway, new year new you, right? So let’s start with a plan, shall we? Gifting a calendar or planner is a great way to motivate your dear ones. Passion Planner (www.passionplanner.comhas a great planner that acts as an organizer and accountability partner. It helps plan out your day to day and month to month. There isn’t a better time to gift calendars than now. Add a personal touch or a shared memory to the design of the calendars. Vista print can help with designing and direct shipping of your calendars.

                                                            Cook Christmas Dinner
This is a fool-proof way to say your thank you’s at one time. Offer to cook Christmas dinner. It could be a friends’ dinner, friends and family dinner or just a dinner for two (wink). Sharing food is a thing of love. The act itself is very telling. A lot of very important negotiations happen over food and drinks. The reason is simply catering to your first need as a human. Offer to cook but don’t be shy to ask your guests to show up with a dish or pastry or wine for the dinner. This can cut your cost and be all inclusive at the same time. Be a good guest and offer to toast to the New Year!
Side note: Wrapping paper changes the mood of the receiver. Think outside the box. Get a fun, silly wrapper preferably winter inspired and wrap away.

•The Khaki Bomber Jacket• | LOOKBOOK• & Its My Birthday!

Yaas! Time for another lookbook. The khaki obsession continues but this time we are talking bomber jackets.

The funny thing is, I really did not like these at first. I don't know how or why but they just grew on me! now I love em'. There are certainly ways you can dress these up to make them look more sophisticated.

Keep reading below to see my favourite styles...

Check out the gorgeous @Nhommot.kuch who paired her khaki jacket with white jeans and a sheer white top. The white really softens the khaki color - it is actually my favourite colour to wear with anything khaki!

Here is @Nhommot.kuch again rocking these jackets. The one on the left is a longer version which is less common but still looks super cute with an oversized black t-shirt. Both outfits look so edgy.

Hey girl! @chanelboateng. Chanel decided to pair her jacket with both white and black. This lady's style is always poppin! - she provides style inspo for the curvier women and shows that you can rock fashionable clothes too!

Wait. Let's take a minute to pree (to check out, - London slang lol) @sjjdavidsen's FACE BEAT!! Slaaaaay. I think this has to be my favourite khaki bomber look. Incorporating my favourite white jeans and also a khaki t-shirt. Who wouldn't love this?

Our khaki goddess @styledbyjmarie has done it again. Look how she transforms what is a simple look, just by adding a khaki jacket. It completes the outfit.

Shayla the slayer (get it?) has dressed her bomber jacket up, looking all official with a céline bag, werkkkkkk!

@denisemelissa_ is simply a fashion killer.  Just look at these outfits please. This is definitely a way in which I would rock my jacket. The shoes and EVERYTHING!!

@ShirleyBEniang is outcheaa relaxing in her khaki jacket and all white. Looks so classy but fashionable at the same time. That's why I love this jacket - you can use to to create so many different looks. Dress it up or dress it down.

Best friend goalssssss!

Another thing I love is the way this jacket looks with a big gold watch. I am obsessed with these watches in general but with a khaki bomber jacket like this you just can't go wrong. It will give your outfit life!

When your  daughter is just as cute as you..
This adorable girl @beau.lifee sure knows how to kill em' in a khaki bomber. We love this!

So there it is, now you have seen some ways you can style your khaki bomber. Happy styling!

If you follow me on Instagram (@djournae) you would know that it was my birthday this past Saturday - 28th November. Do you guys ever have those days when you feel like you're actually living!!! When life isn't 'perfect' but it's good enough for you. You wake up feeling airy, super positive, way up...

I feel like I am having those days a lot right now , I don't know what it is but something always makes me smile and makes me feel greatful and blessed. It truly is an amazing feeling.

•GUEST BLOGGER• ~Nana Ashanti - Choosing Your Girl Squad!

Hey loves, its Nana here. Today I talk about how to choose your girl squad. You are probably thinking, “Aren’t we too old for that. Where are we, high school? My answer to that is no we are not. No one is too old enough to have a circle of good, lovely and dependable people in their lives.
As women, having some girlfriends in your life is not only beneficiary for our social lives but also a source of great information and support. As we get older, naturally we go through changes and who better to gist about this with than your few good men?
So we watched,” Sex and the City”, “Girlfriends”, “Friends” and “How I met your mother”. Admit it you wanted to have friends that were as fabulous as the women of Sex and the City were. You were Carrie and all you needed were your Charlotte and Miranda because we all know one Samantha. Typically, girl squads have been known for pettiness and cat fights but if you know how to choose your life partners (because they will be), the journey of life will be a lot more enjoyable and pleasant.

First thing to do when making friends for life is to find commonality. This could be a shared love, background or passion. Trust me, this is one way to be rid of senseless arguments. In Sex and the City, all the women loved New York City. Their lives were there, their past was rooted there and no matter how far they traveled, they always ended up in New York.
Finding a commonality is key because a common denominator reveals a common goal and passion. My 3 friends are all immigrants. I have friends from the country but in my girl squad and my village, all my girlfriends are immigrants from African, Asian and Caribbean countries. We share a sense of family in a way so most our conversations are skewed in that direction. Having commonality with your girlfriends gives an unending list of conversation to have, information to share and support each other through issues the entire group is familiar with.
Another important factor is age. I am at an age where I have acquaintances that are barely legal to friends in their 40s. This is a very good balance because you get to know what is in, new and cool to getting good personal experience advice from everyone. When picking your girl squad, you will want people who are closer in age to you or in the same age bracket. The reason being, naturally you are all experiencing the same things at the same time. In my case, I’m in my early 20s. My friends are also in the 20s bracket. All of us are figuring out dating, careers, higher education and life in general. None of us have families of our own so we get the tie to plan outings and future travel as and when we please. Picking a good age bracket ensures a shared experience and sympathy for each other because most likely you’re going through the same thing.
Lastly, a very important factor to consider: Vision for the future. It’s ok to be selfish and prefer to hang around people that share your vision. If you want to go higher, keep people who want you to go higher too. Choose your girl squad based on people who empower you, not yes men. But people who offer criticisms, encouragement and support. There are some acquaintances that are fun and love being around you.  You love them and wish you guys met more often. However, deep down you know this person is not a good influence in your life. Drama is entertaining and all but in choosing your life partners, be sure to keep these people at arm’s length. The goal in choosing our girl squad is to be yoked to women who are positive, willing, aware, helpful, available and supportive.
The reason why it’s imperative to keep a few good friends is that no man is an island. We are all on a weird journey in this thing called life. Why not hold hands with a few good men who want to experience this with you? Hey, we all need someone to slap us back to reality every now and then.
Next time, we’ll talk about how to make friends.

•Tomistic Hair• | 2 MONTH REVIEW| VIRGIN HAIR•

Hey Dolls!

So you know that this year I've been wrapping my natural hair up in protective styles just for a little bit more growth (6 inches I wish) but is that even possible?
But anyway, I decided to try out some virgin hair from a company called Tomistic Hair. They are based over here in London which is great and made shipping a ton load easier. They also carry a wide range of Virgin Hair of different origins and textures.

The owner Gloria (who is lovely btw) helped me chose a texture that would blend much easily with my 4b natural hair so I decided to go with their Peruvian Bodywave in the inches 18,20,22,24 just because I wanted that *gone with the wind fabolous* look.

I've been wearing this hair for a while now so this will be my 2 month review.

Keep reading to see what i thought of the hair, pictures and all the details of the company...

Delivery and Packaging

This hair came to my house the next day by Royal Mail recorded delivery which was a relief as I spend most of my time chasing up packages, especially my American ones (you know the story). however they do ship internationally so wherever you are, you can get your hands on this hair!

I have to start off by showing you the packaging. I was so impressed with how much time and effort went in to making their products look very presentable. The little bags and ribbons we're so cute and also a great way to keep the hair safe and protected.

First Impressions Of The Hair

What caught my eye straight away was the very pretty bodywave that the hair had to it. By this point I could not wait to install the hair because I knew that the curls were going to come out bomb!  The texture is another thing that I loved It's was very soft and luscious, but not too silky at the same time. I could run my fingers through the hair without getting a single strand of tangling or shedding. The bundles we're also very full - yay!

The colour was much darker compared to a lot of my other virgin hair. I believe it was a 1b but it defiantly had less of brownish undertone. I love this because my hair is naturally dark and it meant that I did not have to dye the hair jet black. I am actually thinking of dying it soon however. What colour do you guys think? Ombré? Grey? Purple? Rainbow? - just kidding.

Making My U-Part Wig

I made a u-part wig using all four bundles on my usual wig cap with adjustable straps that fits perfectly. The bundles we're very easy to work with, barely any tangling. I flipped the tracks all around the u-part except for the top where I had to cut a few of the wefts. The wefts are constructed well. They are not super thick but they are thick enough. The bundles were also quite long.Of course i sew around the perimeter of the u-part for extra security. Another thing I must add is that the tracks are full from root to tip. I know with some hair the ends can get very thin and look dry but not with this hair, oh no.

If you would like a full post on how I make my u-part please let me know

Tangling and Shedding

Honestly, the hair barely tangles which is great considering the texture. I did not seal my wefts so I do experience a little shedding but it is very MINIMAL! Since I re-washed the hair after wearing it for 2 weeks the shedding was even less. I use the Hello Hydration Herbal Essences conditioner as always and I find that conditioning it always gives it that extra life and body! I try to do this every 1 to 2 weeks just because I love the natural curl pattern of the hair and this is when it is at its best.

OMG this is my favourite bit!
The hair is extremely low maintenance!! I could literally wake up in the morning, brush it out and go!

However, for the days when I do have time on my hands, I usually set the hair overnight. Just use a spray bottle to slightly dampen the hair, detangle the section slightly and roll it up using my flexi rods. The size depends on how big I would like my curls.
For big waves such as the ones above I use 6 of the 1/2 flexi rods.
In the morning I take them down, spray on some holding spray and voila! - My curls last all day.

I do the same thing when I want tighter curls in my hair - except I use much smaller flexi rods. Honestly I'd never thought of using really small flexi rods on body wave hair to get that deep curl look. But lord was I wrong! The way this hair holds these curls all day is amazing! The definition is literally everything!! I have never tried hair as versatile as this.

I did layer the hair in the front, just to give me some bangs, it looks lovely when curled. Other than that I do not really do much to the hair. Most of the time it is either curled or in its natural state which still looks so pretty. I did straighten the hair last week using my Treseme heat protectant and it was quick and easy. - Ideal for a sleek look to rock to a formal event.
As i mentioned before I did use 4 bundles so the hair is quite full yet, it is not heavy on my head at all. It is very lightweight. All day long I can't help but to run my fingers through the hair. Both the fullness and the lengths are perfect.

From my last review I mentioned the 'Kera Care Wax Stick' that I was trying out to help blend my leave out. I have natural 4b/c Hair that is stubborn! It loves to frizz up. But, I think i'm getting the hang of this wax stick. It really does help my hair lay down all day. The key is to use a little because a little really does go along way. As well as this, this time I left out a lot less leave-out which also helped with the blending. The hair isn't too silky so it is fairly easy to blend in.

Customer Service
Gloria at Tomistic Hair is so lovely! She is very easy to talk to and will help you find the hair that will suit you best! I honestly love this company dolls. Not only is their hair amazing but they are too!

Buy this hair now and thank me later! Tomistic Hair will surely have you looking on fleeeeeeeek.
Every time I go out I get asked what hair I'm wearing because people think I keep changing it up. But no, it's the same hair! That is why I love it. There's so many different looks you can receive with Tomistic Hair. This has to be the best Virgin hair I've tried!! Seriously!
